Electives

Computer Science at HTMS introduces students to the fundamentals of technology with a strong focus on coding and problem-solving. Students learn to think logically and creatively as they explore programming through hands-on projects and real-world applications.

French at HTMS immerses students in the language and culture of the Francophone world. Through speaking, listening, reading, and writing, students build a strong foundation in communication and global awareness.

The content of the gifted elective, Enrichment, will be determined by the students’ interests using an Interest Inventory at the beginning of the course each year. The course will include hands-on learning experiences in which students explore and deepen their knowledge of areas of interest to them. The following gifted education best practices may be implemented throughout the Enrichment course: curriculum compacting, learning contracts, independent studies, higher order thinking activities, literature circles, Socratic circles, flexible grouping, Renzulli’s Enrichment Triad, Six Thinking Hats, Creative Problem Solving, creative thinking, bibliotherapy, 21st Century skills, Future Problem Solvers, service- learning, philosophy, differentiated curriculum, and concept-based curriculum. This elective is for identified GaTE (Gifted and Talented Education) students.

Medical Detectives at HTMS introduces students to the fascinating world of forensic science and epidemiology as they explore how experts solve real-life medical mysteries. Through hands-on case studies, students learn to analyze symptoms, interpret data, and apply scientific reasoning to understand disease outbreaks and diagnostic processes.

Pre-Engineering at HTMS challenges students to solve real-world problems using the engineering design process. Through hands-on projects and collaborative work, students apply math, science, and technology to create innovative solutions.

Spanish at HTMS invites students to explore the language and vibrant cultures of Spanish-speaking communities through engaging lessons in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. With an emphasis on real-world communication, students build confidence in conversation and develop a deeper understanding of global perspectives.

Students will rotate to 4 different courses every nine weeks. Choices have included: Art, Choir, Intro to Coding, Creative Writing, Digital Citizenship, Theatre, Leadership, and Spanish. Students will not choose the course they start with or the 4 courses they will rotate through. The selected courses are subject to change due to summer scheduling. This is a great opportunity for students to see different elective options that they will have during middle school.
